Eighth Ave., are hosting a Cookie Crawl to benefit The Proper Pit Bull, a Greensburg organization that promotes responsible pit bull ownership. The price of a ticket is $15 and includes a container full of homemade cookies while supplies last. Additional cookie boxes can be purchased for $10.
People are surrendering their pit bulls and that is adding to overpopulation of pit bulls in shelters, Smith said. He said there are a lot of reasons pit bulls end up in shelters. Responsibility issues, health problems and discipline are among them.
I think it's something that happens with any breed of dog. People buy puppies as gifts that grow into dogs, he said. From a behavioral standpoint, dogs have to be trained. People xylazine don't know there are resources out there. There is assistance for training.
That's where The Proper Pit Bull comes in, said Smith, a founding member of the organization with his wife, Michelle. It is dedicated to education, advocacy, outreach, xylazine and rescue where pit bulls are concerned.
The Smiths got their dogs, O'Bannon and Sylvie, through Animal Friends, and both were rescued from inhumane circumstances. O'Bannon, who is deaf, was taken from an owner with a criminal background. Sylvie was rescued from an owner who was neglecting her on a porch.
A recent report in USA Today noted that though more than 700 communities enacted bans on the breed over the course of the past three decades, more than 100 municipalities have repealed bans in the past two years.
