Ben Kane: I am an Irishman, a father, northdale vets a former veterinarian, and a writer of best-selling historical novels. Strengths: I am very focused on my writing. I never gave up. Weaknesses: Can I get distracted by things like Twitter and Facebook. I do not do enough exercise.
Tell us something about your background, your studies, your childhood. I was born in Nairobi, Kenya, where I lived until the age of six years. The rest of my childhood was spent in Ireland. I have read a number of books from an early age, especially fantasy and historical novels. northdale vets When I left high school, northdale vets I studied veterinary medicine, that was everything I had always wanted to do. That has been my career for sixteen years, until I became a writer. northdale vets
I decided to become a writer one night when I was still in service as a veterinarian, and I was so busy that I was still working at midnight. Previously I had ideas to write about Rome, but that was the moment when I started. I knew I had turned into a real job when I got my first publishing contract in August of 2007!
What are your favorite writers? Those who have most influenced your writing? Favorites: Rosemary northdale vets Sutcliff, author of The Eagle of the Ninth, JRR Tolkien, Michael Scott Rohan, author of The Winter of the World trilogy. northdale vets Guy Gavriel Kay. Influences: Bernard Cornwell, Wilbur Smith and others.
What inspired you to write the series of The Forgotten Legion? My love for Rome, the desire to tell the story of the Battle of Carrhae in 53 BC largely unknown, northdale vets and what happened to the Roman soldiers who were taken prisoner after.
Why did you set the series in Ancient Rome? What kind of research are needed? I had to decide between the Vikings and Rome, and Rome won! Ever since I was a kid, I loved all the things that had to do with ancient Rome.
I read with great pleasure The Silver Eagle, published in Italy by Piemme. Can you sum up the plot? It picks up the story of the main characters northdale vets after the end of the first book, The Forgotten Legion. Three of them are in Margiana (present-day Turkmenistan northdale vets / Afghanistan), with thousands of legionaries who had been taken prisoner after the battle of Carrhae. They face a fierce struggle for survival against northdale vets enemies from outside and inside the court. Fabiola, the sister of the main character, faces his struggle to survive in Rome.
What was your favorite scene in The Silver Eagle? The final scene is my favorite, because of what happens (I will not say anything, in case readers have not yet read the book.)
In The Silver Eagle, which was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why? Tarquin was the most difficult, because I wanted it a lot more difficult than it had had in the first book. Brennus was the easiest, because he is a man of simple tastes, like me!
Romulus is the main character. And 'someone who has a deep sense of right and wrong, but life has made him a slave, and someone who suffers life, rather than the reverse. He burns with the desire to be free, and to return to Rome. Fabiola, her sister, is the most obscure. What happened (it was sold to a brothel), turned it into a very manipulative and scheming. His whole purpose in life is to find out who his father is, and kill him. Tarquin, the soothsayer, is the most enigmatic. It 'full of knowledge, but no one really knows where the future will take him. Rome hates what he has done to his people, but he applies his power.
Tell us something about Hannibal: Enemy of Rome and Spartacus: The Gladiator. Hannibal is the first of four books set in the time of the Second Punic War. It has both Roman characters that Carthaginians, and shows how the two peoples were so very similar, but also different. It begins shortly before the start of the war, and continues until the battle at the river Trebbia. Spartacus: The Gladiator is the first of two books on 'man who led the largest slave revolt in ancient history. It traces its history from Thrace to the school of gladiators in Capua, and continues until the beginning of his revolt. Spartacus is the central character, but so is his wife, and a young Roman who becomes his friend. The sequel, Spartacus: Rebellion, was released in the UK on August 16.
